Governor of Texas Greg Abbott
Governor Greg Abbott has been a central figure in Texas politics, well known for his conservative stance and resilient leadership. Greg Abbott preceded Rick Perry after he announced he would not seek a fifth term as Texas Governor. Greg Abbott defeated Democrat Senator Wendy Davis at the 2014 general election to become the 48th Governor of Texas, Abbott was officially sworn in on January 20, 2015. Greg Abbott brings a plethora of experience to the people of Texas with a strong background in law. Abbot's experience as a lawyer and his tenure as the former Attorney General of Texas has shaped his approach to governance.
As a traditional Catholic Greg Abbott has aligned his leadership with conservative values and has firmly defended religious liberty. On June 11, 2015, Governor Abbott signed the Pastor Protection Act, which allows faith leaders the right to refuse same-sex martial ceremonies if they feel in violation of their beliefs. Greg Abbott went further when he signed Senate Bill 24 at Grace Church in the Woodlands on May 21, 2017. "You will be shielded by any effort by any other government official in any other part of the state of Texas from having subpoenas to try to pry into what you’re doing here in your churches." Governor Greg Abbott.
Countless lawsuits and SCOTUS interventions have been much the theme in the Abbott Governorship as he fiercely advocates for border security a critical issue for Texans, which has been amplified since the Biden administration was inaugurated. “One of the most crucial rights granted in the U.S. Constitutional is a state's ability to secure its own border.” writes Governor Abbott as the issue of national security has been the genesis of the State of Texas along the U.S. Southern Border. The persistent battle between the US Constitution and the Biden Administration has inspired Gov.Abbot to formulate "The Texas Plan" a convention to amend the US Constitution to ensure the rule of law is upheld in regulatory proceedings.
Abbott’s leadership has been marked by significant policy initiatives and responses to major events. Abbott memorably enacted the "Texas Heart Beat Act" in May 2021 which is considered landmark pro-life state legislation with Florida following suit. Economically, Abbott has focused on promoting business growth and job creation to maintain the reputation of Texas as a business-friendly state. His administration has prioritized cutting taxes and reducing regulations to attract companies and stimulate economic activity including major reform around property taxes.
